Maya Simone's unconventional journey into the realm of music is as distinctive as her soul-filled, mystical sound. Named after the legendary Maya Angelou and Nina Simone, she initially found her passion in an unexpected arena—horseback riding. Throughout much of her childhood, Maya competed as a horseback rider, a path seemingly far removed from the musical realm.

However, the seeds of her soulful sound were sown by her father's love for iconic artists such as Jill Scott, Prince, and Stevie Wonder. Little did Maya know that this early exposure to soulful melodies would later become the driving force behind her musical journey.

The transition from horseback riding to singing was an unexpected turn. Maya began training to sing when she found herself nervous on horseback, and this marked the beginning of her exploration into the world of vocal expression. Unbeknownst to her, music had quietly influenced her life, paving the way for a transformative moment when she decided to give singing a chance.

In 2016, Maya took the stage at open mics across Philadelphia, marking the beginning of her musical career. Her raw and authentic sound resonated with audiences, eventually leading to the release of her debut album, "AYAM," in 2021. This album serves as a narrative of becoming and accepting what is to come—a testament to Maya's artistic evolution and self-discovery.

Maya Simone, a spirit-invoking artist, has not only performed for top industry professionals but has also graced renowned platforms nationwide, including Tedx, NPR, Issae Rae, Sofar Sounds, and events hosted by former Philadelphia Grammy Chapter president Donn T. Her journey reflects the fusion of diverse influences, from equestrian pursuits to soulful melodies, shaping Maya into a unique and captivating presence in the world of music.

Additionally, Maya brings a wealth of teaching experience to her craft, immersing herself in guiding aspiring musicians on their own creative journeys. Her dedication to imparting knowledge and nurturing talent adds yet another layer to her multifaceted career, cementing her legacy as both an artist and a mentor.

AYAM

“AYAM is now my daily reminder to honor all the experiences and people that made me who AYAM. Like all of Maya’s music the words and sounds are very intentional. There is a power behind them that moves the soul. From the Rebirth to the AYAM, the journey is personal but it resonates so that all who listen can incorporate it into their lives as a conduit for a peaceful grateful state of mind.”
